Bestselling poet, Joseph Spencer with a thought provoking piece
VOLTAIRE, VIRGIL OR JUST A RAVING MAD MAN?
In this new piece, I delve into the vestiges of history to try to understand the origins of what has been a rather bleak picture of modernity/ modern times in 2023. Mediocrity is now the order of the day and humanity has taken the back stage for cheap props. I honestly think what we need more urgently instead of a Black History month is a ' World Humanity month'. The Universe is on the precipice of real disaster if we do not retrace our steps and take proper accountability to discover genuine humanity and kindness.
Voltaire railed hard against the establishment as he saw through their gimmicks, especially the Roman Catholic church which was then closely aligned with the French government. Virgil on the other hand was a visionary who predicted the birth of Christ. Both Greats had an irrevocable faith in the goodness of 'Humanity', but I will go out on a limb and be a raving mad man to go against the grain and postulate that mankind is inherently wicked, as avarice and self centredness has eaten deep into our fabric. We have all failed and need to do better!
To my fellow Black people in diaspora, Africa is not just a prop to be invoked every Black History month; What are your contributions to the development of the Motherland? Africa needs you and your exposure to get better, as our leaders have proven to be monumental failures. The mantle to make a seismic change and not just virtue signal and spread awareness about Black History month is now. Action is now the tool for actual progress.
In an excerpt from the poem, ' Tablet of Tragedies'... 'pestilence and the paucity of humanity enmeshed in virtue signals that rebrand evil in colorless vagaries' opines that the suffering of humanity can only be cured by genuineness. The time for accountability and humanity is now.
